What is a custom foot orthotic?
Custom orthotics are known to reduce overuse injuries and improve efficiency and power during activity. They are soft or semi-rigid shoe inserts that are custom-molded to your foot and fit into your shoes. They stabilize the foot and provide a strong lever for the body to move over.

How can orthotics help you?
The human body functions as a kinetic chain; what occurs at the end of the chain (your foot and ankle) affects the quality and quantity of motion at joints further up the chain (knees, hips, pelvis, lumbar, Thoracic and cervical spine). Orthotics alter the position and motion of the foot and ankle, which impacts the position and motion of joints further up the chain. Improved alignment helps to alleviate stress and pain in these joints and the surrounding muscles and tendons. Reducing strain on these structures provides you with greater pain-free range of motion, improved strength, and power within a more optimal range of motion. End result is better performance!

How are orthotics made?
The first step in making orthotics is to observe you standing, walking, running and squatting. A thorough evaluation of your foot and ankle is performed next by taking multiple measurements of your foot and ankle position and motion in standing and while lying down. Based on your height, weight, performance level, symptoms, foot posture, the type of footwear you desire to wear, you and your therapist will decide which device and materials are best for you. Next casts of your feet are taken and sent to a lab for fabrication.
