What
is aquatic therapy?
Aquatic therapy is customized exercises that take place
in the medium of water. Immersion depths in the water can
range from ankle to shoulder height.
What
are the benefits of aquatic therapy?
Increased/maintained cardiovascular conditioning, improved
range of motion and strength, decreased swelling and pain,
elevated emotional status, as well as increased functional
activities have all been experienced in Aquatic therapy.
Where
is aquatic therapy?
The Y.M.C.A. pool is located at 1150 Gorgas Avenue in the
Presidio National Park in San Francisco. Pleas note: All
patients must register at Presidio Sport & Medicine
before starting the aquatic therapy program.
Will
I get a good workout?
The intensity of the workout is very dependent on the current
status of your injury as well as your motivation. You can
get a superb workout if your effort level is high. One's
heart rate will remain lower in the water than that on
land as the effects of gravity are eliminated. Regardless,
the cardiovascular benefits are just as great as those
on land with little to no impact
How
soon can I start aquatic therapy after my injury?
The answer is very injury dependent. Your doctor or physical
therapist will let you know. Most people can start immediately
often on a low intensity basis. Others may have to wait
until an incision is fully closed before getting into the
water.
When
are the classes?
The schedule changes seasonally. There are six therapy
and community classes taught each week. Please call Presidio
Sport & Medicine at 415.674.9530 for current class
schedules and registration requirements.
How
much does the aquatic therapy class cost?
There are insurance and self-pay rates. Please call the
Presidio Sport & Medicine at 415.674.9530 for rate
information.
Who
teaches the aquatic therapy classes?
Fully licensed physical therapists from Presidio Sport
& Medicine. We have over 10 years of aquatic therapy
experience. We customize workouts/treatments according
to the needs of individual and his/her current injury status.
If
I can't swim can I still come to water therapy?
There are buoyancy belts worn for the deep water therapy
program. Individuals may also use additional buoyancy devices
as well as holding onto the wall. Others stay in the shallow
end and in the hot tub. If you have a fear of the water
this may not be a recommended method of rehabilitation
for you.
How
warm is the water?
This is not a therapeutic temperature pool. It can range
from 80-85 degrees. The hot tub is 104 degrees.
What
do I need to bring to the class?
Registration and payments are completed at the Presidio
Sport & Medicine, so you will need to bring your laminated
aquatic therapy card and your bathing suit. If you have
toiletries and valuables, you may want to bring a lock
for your locker. The Y.M.C.A. provides towels and they
also have wallet sized lockable lockers for you.
